Urška Klakočar Zupančič was born on 19 June 1977 in Trbovlje. She grew up in Sevnica and has been living in Ljubljana with her two sons for several years now. While still attending secondary school, she spent some time living and studying in Glastonbury, England, an experience that profoundly influenced her later life. She received her baccalaureate in 1996 with top marks, continuing her studies at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana. During her graduation year in 2001, she interned at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Her graduate thesis was on international organisations and international economic relations. She passed the bar in 2005 and started working for the Office of the President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Slovenia as a Senior Judicial Advisor. Her main topic of interest shifted to legal history, which would become the subject of her master’s thesis in 2011. Towards the end of 2008, she became a judge at the Ljubljana District Court, ruling in civil non-contentious matters related to property, denationalisation, and law of inheritance. She left the judiciary in 2021 and began working for her own company, offering business and legal consulting services, primarily relating to real-estate law, land registry law, and property law.

In 2022, she joined a new political party – Gibanje Svoboda (Freedom Movement), becoming its vice-president. She was elected to the National Assembly during the April 2022 parliamentary elections. During the inaugural session of the 9th Term on 13 May 2022, she was also elected President of the National Assembly, the first woman to hold the office since Slovenia gained independence. She is passionate about protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms.

She speaks English, German, and Croatian, as well as having passive knowledge of Italian.

She has been a keen writer since her childhood. During the past few years, she published monthly academic papers pertaining to legal history. In April 2021, she also published a historical novel, Gretin greh (Greta’s Sin). In addition to writing, she is also passionate about horseback riding and travelling.

She is a mum to twins Filip and David, born in 2012.
